History

A Brief History of Stichting DO

Founded in 1987, Stichting DO was established by theater maker Moos d’Herripon and musician Kees Wieringa. Their mission was to break away from their traditional backgrounds (dance and music) to create a new, multidisciplinary form of musical theater.

Key highlights of their journey include:

  • 1996–2001: This pivotal period defined DO’s identity through boldness, innovation, and social engagement, moving from loose activities to a centralized artistic hub.
  • Cultural Impact: The foundation became known for its perfect timing with reality. Notable examples include the production Atlas, which coincided with global tensions in Iraq, and the launch of DO Records.
  • Media Recognition: Their exploration of spirituality in music (DO Music) even earned them a dedicated special on national television (VPRO).

Over the decades, Stichting DO evolved into a platform where art acts as a social commentary, constantly blurring the lines between disciplines to provoke public debate and reflection.

The Role of the Board

The board of Stichting DO supports the organization’s mission to remain artistically independent. Their primary responsibilities include:

Overseeing the various branches such as DO Records and DO Music.

Ensuring the foundation’s activities align with its original goals of social engagement and innovation.

Managing the communication and public relations strategy, which is a high priority for the foundation.

Advisors

Advisory & Support

To ensure a clear and objective perspective on societal developments, Stichting DO works with a network of advisors and partners across various sectors. These advisors help the foundation:

  • Navigate Trends: Identify “accent shifts” in culture and economy to stay relevant.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Strategy: Provide expertise that bridges the gap between dance, music, and social commentary.
  • Public Outreach: Assist in tapping into the right publicity channels to ensure their small-scale projects achieve high public impact.

By collaborating with external experts, the foundation ensures that its work—ranging from historical pieces like Atlas to modern spirituality projects—remains both artistically bold and socially grounded.
